Syncing contacts across 4 devices

April 26, 2010 8:24 pm

Being a gadget nerd can sometimes be a pain.

It wasn't so bad when I only had the iphone and the blackberry, but now with the droid AND iPad it has gotten difficult.

I tried a few different options for keeping my contacts in sync across all of them and the only thing I've found that works painlessly so far is this setup.

The phones

  • The Blackberry is a blackberry tour hooked up to the exchange server at my office.
  • The Droid is hooked up to my google account... as an adroid phone should be..
  • The iPhone 3GS was using mobileme to keep all of my contacts/etc backed up (with my gmail hooked up for email via imap).. it's now using googles new activesync to hook it up as an exchange account... which I'm loving especially since its seamless and FREE
  • The iPad is set up similarly to the iPhone.

Soocial

To keep the google contacts in sync with the exchange server on my blackberry I tried a few different things, but soocial.com seems to be the best of the bunch. It's hassle free.. runs in the background on the blackberry and runs via what I'm assuming is a cron job on their website to connect to google for me. They also have a really nice deduping feature.

They recently came out of beta and I'm thinking about upgrading to a premium account. The free account allows up to 3 connections with up to 250 contacts.. but right now I'm almost at 400 contacts.. so I'm already over the limit.
