The Social List http://www.digitalkristin.com/feed en-us http://blogs.law.harvard.edu/tech/rss Sweetcron kpishdadi@gmail.com Syncing contacts across 4 devices http://www.digitalkristin.com/items/view/12399 Being a gadget nerd can sometimes be a pain.

It wasn't so bad when I only had the iphone and the blackberry, but now with the droid AND iPad it has gotten difficult.

I tried a few different options for keeping my contacts in sync across all of them and the only thing I've found that works painlessly so far is this setup.

The phones

  • The Blackberry is a blackberry tour hooked up to the exchange server at my office.
  • The Droid is hooked up to my google account... as an adroid phone should be..
  • The iPhone 3GS was using mobileme to keep all of my contacts/etc backed up (with my gmail hooked up for email via imap).. it's now using googles new activesync to hook it up as an exchange account... which I'm loving especially since its seamless and FREE
  • The iPad is set up similarly to the iPhone.

Soocial

To keep the google contacts in sync with the exchange server on my blackberry I tried a few different things, but soocial.com seems to be the best of the bunch. It's hassle free.. runs in the background on the blackberry and runs via what I'm assuming is a cron job on their website to connect to google for me. They also have a really nice deduping feature.

They recently came out of beta and I'm thinking about upgrading to a premium account. The free account allows up to 3 connections with up to 250 contacts.. but right now I'm almost at 400 contacts.. so I'm already over the limit.

MP3 Player Randomness...Share http://www.digitalkristin.com/items/view/10504 (1) Turn on your MP3 player.
(2) Go to SHUFFLE songs mode.
(3) Write down the first 25 songs that come up--song title and artist--NO editing/cheating, please.
(4) Choose 25 (or less) people to be tagged. It is generally considered to be in good taste to tag the person who tagged you.
If I tagged you, it's because I want to know more about your musical tastes, or at least a random sampling thereof. (To do this, go to "NOTES" under tabs on your profile page, paste these instructions in the body of the note, enter your 25 Shuffle Songs, Click 'Preview' below to tag people, then click Publish)

NOTE I used my computer and not my mp3 player. So this was taken from my entire library.

1. The Chemical Brothers - Hold Tight
2. Jay-Z - Dead Presidents II
3. Tiesto - In My Memory
4. Benny Benassi - Satisfaction
5. Corner Stone Cues - Requiem for a Tower, Movement 4

Recruiting http://www.digitalkristin.com/items/view/10183 Hello friends & family!

I'm looking for some feedback on some usability testing on some website concepts we've been working on over the last month or so.

If you're 25+ and a homeowner with a couple hours to spare in exchange for a $50 gift card, please get ahold of me.

Thanks!

GPS Spotting http://www.digitalkristin.com/items/view/8703 I'm hardwiring my GPS tomorrow to the battery in my car, so I don't have to have it plugged into the cigarette lighter all of the time. Where do you keep your GPS in your car? At the top or bottom of your windshield.. on the left or the right? Since this is permanent... I'm not sure where to put it.

Get your hair did http://www.digitalkristin.com/items/view/8216 I stumbled across Mopshots today. Love it!

It's a very simple idea but niche enough to be useful and they executed it very well.

What is it? Basically a catalog of haircuts, with a few comments from the person and information about which salon they used.

For someone like me who has a complete phobia of getting haircuts due to a bad one I received long ago.. this site is a lifesaver!

You can browse haircuts by style, length, city where the salon is, color, hair type (straight, curly, etc.)... so finding a cut that will work on your hair is simple.

Get your hair did

There is a bit of a social aspect to it also. People can vote on which ones they love, and comment on the haircut so you can see what other people think of it before you print out the page and go traipsing into a salon with it.

Every individual makes a difference. http://www.digitalkristin.com/items/view/6619 memeOk.. I've got to complain! Why does William get an album cover that looks so cool, and mine looks like it's some honkey country album?

To Do This:

1 - Go to "wikipedia." Hit “random” or click http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random The first random wikipedia article you get is the name of your band.

2 - Go to "Random quotations" or click http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php3 The last four or five words of the very last quote of the page is the title of your first album.

3 - Go to flickr and click on “explore the last seven days” or click http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days Third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.

4 - Use photoshop or similar to put it all together.

5 - Post it to FB with this text in the "caption" and TAG the friends you want to join in.

Getting Social http://www.digitalkristin.com/items/view/6444 Anyone who knows me, knows I'm a sucker for any kind of social network, anything geeky, and anything beta.

Here are my faves lately.

DailyMugshot - As the title says. You take your mugshot every day. A creative spin on it, I've decided to use it to catalog my shoe habbit.
http://www.dailymugshot.com/authuser/show/17385

Brightkite - A location based networking site. In real time you can see where your friends are and what they're up to. Depending on your privacy settings you can also meet others nearby.
http://brightkite.com/kristin

Readernaut - I recently got a Kindle and have been reading anything I can get my hands on. I've been on this one for a while now and am excited to say it's finally open to public signups! If you're a bookworm like I am.. make sure you check this one out.
http://readernaut.com/kristin/

Also changing - I've decided to go back to a normal commenting system. Google friendconnect just wasn't cutting it.. It doesn't notify me when people comment on blog entries which makes it nearly impossible to track. I haven't decided between Disqus or IntenseDebate, but one will be up asap.

iPhone Exchange Calendar http://www.digitalkristin.com/items/view/4501 How to: Reset the Exchange calendar color on your iPhone to Red

I set an ical calendar to be red, and it messed up the Exchange color on my iphone to be some hideous bright teal color that I couldn't even read.

After much digging through forums and google I finally found the solution.

Go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars, > (Your Exchange Calendar)

Turn the Calendrs Off, and then Switch them back on to reset the color.

FriendConnect Directory http://www.digitalkristin.com/items/view/4299 I'm having a little issue finding the value behind Google Friendconnect other than the use for comments which I've put into blog posts here. If you're using Google Friendconnect on your site, I came across a little directory that has a listing of sites that use it also.

Check it out at: Google Friend Connect Directory

Our New Boxee http://www.digitalkristin.com/items/view/3734

We've got our boxee up and running on the shuttle PC in the livingroom. It's obviously a work in progress since boxee is in alpha but so far I'm loving it! The kids are really enjoying it also. If you'd like an invite, post a comment below and I'll send one to your gmail account.

Math and my geeky family http://www.digitalkristin.com/items/view/3685 Somehow we ended up at Tiger Direct today purchasing a shuttle pc, a diNovo Mini™, and various other hardware to build a media box for our living room.

While watching unbuntu install on the tv screen the conversation with my kids went like this...

Cody: How long is this going to take?? Like 4 hours?

Kareem: More like infinity hours!

Mom: More like infinity squared hours!

Kareem: More like infinity rectangle hours!

.... ???

I'm sure you've probably seen some images of her on my lifestream already, but here is fergie, our African Grey parrot. This video was shot the first day she came to stay with us. Hoping once my new camera gets here tomorrow I can catch some good videos of her talking for ya. She's quite a character.

Going Social http://www.digitalkristin.com/items/view/3317 OpenSocial

In an attempt to make my site easier to use I've gone OpenSocial and integrated the new google friendconnect into this site.

This means that all comments on blog posts can now be commented from your google account if you wish. Since there weren't many comments yet I ditched all of the ones that were on IntenseDebate so I could use this new system. If you'd like access to any of the old comments I still have them hooked into my account over there so just let me know and I will send you a xml of them.

Other than the comments, you can also become a fan of kpishdadi.com by hitting the join button via the google friendconnect widget on the homepage. Any questions can be left as a comment below or emailed to me. (kpishdadi)at(gmail).

Yammer http://www.digitalkristin.com/items/view/392 Check out Yammer. It's like twitter, but focused around "what are you working on?", instead of "what are you doing?". In a nutshell, you signup and validate the domain of your work email address by confirming your email.

For example. I work for Sears Holdings and have a Sears Holdings email address. Other people who register with their Sears Holdings email addresses can see my updates, and I can only see updates from other Sears Holdings people who signup. Additionally you can pick and choose who you want to follow inside the company..

Oh yeah.. they also have an adobe air app which makes it easier to use.
